Yesterday at church, our Pastor's message was about fasting. He was speaking from Matthew 6 and there was one word in which I had not ever heard before. The word was "when" and not "if".
I don't know how many times I have read this passage but I surely did not remember the word, "when".
Matthew 6:16-18 says,
God uses the word "when" because it is expected of each and every one of us. Fasting is a normal part of the Christian lifestyle and not just for special occasions. Though our church does a fast every Wednesday, it was a wonderful reminder on why we fast and what it takes.
Not only did I miss the word, I realized I have the honor and the privilege to fast and pray. There are parts of the world where this is not acceptable and there are repercussions if done so.
Fasting requires humility, seriousness and sincerity. Most importantly is it done to create a deeper relationship with God. I don't know about you, but I definitely require more of an intimate relationship with my Heavenly Father!
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for giving me the privilege to have a better connection with you. Thank you for loving me enough to put it on my heart to fast, pray and worship. I understand not everyone in the world has the opportunity and I want to praise Your Name above all names because You deserve it. I am grateful for the people you have surrounded me with, who are like-minded and enjoy seeking You as much as I do. Thank you Father for pursuing me, even when I did not pursue You. Thank you for picking me up off my knees when my flesh gets the best of me. I am eternally grateful for Your constant mercy and grace. Thank you Father God for teaching me how to strengthen our relationship and showing me how important it is to become one with you. Thank you Father for loving me, always. In Jesus' Name. Amen
